Well guided by Pierre Dervaux at the Ecole Normale de Musique of Paris then by Carlo Maria Giulini and Daniel Barenboim, Pierre-Michel Durand won the First Prize of the International Competition of Orchestra conducting in Prague and the Talich Prize when he was 21 years old. From then on he started an international career and conducts in France, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Venezuela ...
He performs with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Monte-Carlo and in various festivals : Radio-France and Montpellier with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra, Besançon, Mai Musical of Florence, the Flandres festival, the Marrakech festival with Barbara Hendricks...
After being conductor’s assistant at the Opera de Paris, he was invited by Orchestre Lamoureux, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Lorraine, the Orchestra of Picardie, the Orchestra of Caracas, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra with whom he recorded Petrouchka by Stravinski for Supraphon. He performed at the Théâtre of Lucerne in La Traviata by Verdi, La Bohème by Puccini, the Szenen aus Goethes Faust by Schumann and La Belle Hélène by Offenbach. In New Dehli, he conducted for the Bonjour India Festival the opera Si j’étais Roi by Adam. At the Opéra Comique in Paris, he conducted La Vie Parisienne with Gabriel Bacquier.
Chief partner of Jean-Claude Casadesus at the National Orchestra of Lille during several seasons, he performed in Lille, in the UK and in Belgium, for the Lille Piano Festivals with the Paris Orchestral Ensemble and in regional tour with La Cenerentola by Rossini and Faust by Gounod at the Opera of Lille. With Jean-Claude Casadesus and the ONL he conducted The Music Victories of 2004.
Pierre-Michel Durand has worked with famous soloists : Pierre Amoyal, Michel Beroff, Gauthier Capuçon, Olivier Charlier, Augustin Dumay, Brigitte Engerer, Romain Garioud, Hélène Grimaud, Gary Hoffman, Laurent Korcia, Eric Le Sage, Misha Maisky, Paul Meyer, Ivan Moravec, Xavier Phillips, Viktoria Postnikova, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Nemanja Radulovic, Mikhaïl Rudy, Paul Tortelier...
In 2004, he founded the Prométhée Orchestra. Since then he has been the guest of shows like the Musiques au Coeur of Eve Ruggieri on National Television in which he accompanied Natalie Dessay, Joyce DiDonato, Jennifer Larmor, Felicity Lott, Patricia Petibon, Roberto Alagna, Ludovic Tézier, Rolando Villazon... He performed in lots of festivals, in symphonic or lyrical repertoire (L’Elixir d’Amor, Don Giovanni, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, La Traviata with Sonya Yoncheva...).
He regularly conducts in prestigious Parisian venues, Radio France, salle Gaveau, salle Pleyel (Mahler symphonies n°1,3,6, R. Strauss Don Quichotte with Marc Coppey, The Rite of Spring, Pictures at an Exhibition, Bruckner’s symphony n°7....). At the Théâtre du Châtelet, he conducted the ballets Daphnis et Chloé by Ravel, Cendrillon by Prokofiev, Les Mariés de la Tour Eiffel. Very much involved in the cultural reflection, he launched a big project in the Parisian area to mix music chamber concerts, educational symphonic concerts and lyrical shows with more than 300 children from underprivileged areas.
Pierre-Michel Durand conducted for big events : Requiem by Verdi in the Nîmes Arenas, Carmen by Bizet at the Arnhem stadium in the Netherlands, Tribute to Pavarotti with Roberto Alagna, Béatrice Uria-Monzon, Ludovic Tézier and pop music idols at the Domain of Paris St Cloud (broadcast on National TV), and at the City of Congress of Nantes (Klezmer Festival with Giora Feidman, Carmina Burana by Orff, Wagner Festival Tribute to Maria Callas, Beethoven’s Symphony n° 9). He also conducted at the salle Pleyel the cine-concert Le Cuirassé Potemkine by Eisenstein on musics by Chostakovich, the Elections Classiques 2012 broadcast on Radio Classique and 12 shows of Don Quichotte at the Théâtre du Châtelet with the Wiener Staatsballett.
He recently conducted several productions at the Théâtre du Châtelet and at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées (gala Les Mozart de l’Opéra.). After the great success of the cine-concert Alexandre Nevski by Eisenstein at the Paris Philharmonie, he is invited this season for two new programs including Pierre and the Wolf with animated movie of Suzie Templeton.
